Record and play back

Record 8 seconds and listen. The recording stays in this tab. The page does not upload it.

Start the test first.

How to test your microphone

  1. Press Start mic test. The browser asks for permission. Press Allow.
  2. Choose your microphone in the list if you have more than one.
  3. Speak in your normal voice. The level meter and the wave must move.
  4. Press Record 8 seconds, speak, then press Play to hear yourself.

What the test shows

The level meter shows how loud the sound is, in dB below the maximum. A value of 0 dB is the loudest sound that the mic can send. Your voice should stay between -24 and -6 dB.

The wave shows the shape of the sound in real time. A flat line means that no sound arrives. A wave that touches the top and the bottom means that the sound is cut off.

The page shows a red warning when the sound is cut off (clipped). This makes your voice sound harsh. Move back from the mic or lower the input volume in the settings of your system.

The playback is the best check. It plays what other people hear in a call. Listen for noise, echo and a voice that is too quiet.

If the microphone does not work

If the browser says that it blocked the microphone, click the lock icon in the address bar and allow the microphone for this site. Then press Start again.

If the page says that no microphone was found, connect a microphone or a headset. Check that the plug is all the way in. Then reload the page.

If the page says that the microphone is in use, close other apps and tabs that may use it, such as a call app. Then press Start again.

If the meter does not move but the page shows no error, choose another microphone in the list. Check the mute switch. Check the input volume in the sound settings of your system.

Questions

Is the mic test free?

Yes. It is free. There are no ads, no limits and no sign-up. You do not install anything.

Does the page record or upload my voice?

No. The sound stays on your device. The page does not send it to a server. A recording is kept in the memory of this tab only, and it is gone when you close the tab. Read more about privacy.

Why does the level meter not move?

The browser may use the wrong microphone, or the mic may be muted. Choose another device in the list. Check the mute switch on a headset. Check that the system does not block the mic.

What is a good level?

Speak in your normal voice. The meter should stay between -24 and -6 dB. If the red warning shows, the sound is cut off, so move back from the mic.

Why does the page say the mic is in use?

Another app or browser tab has the microphone. Close that app or tab, then press Start again. A call or a recording app is often the cause.

Does the test work on a phone?

Yes. Open this page in the browser of your phone and allow the microphone when the browser asks. The page works on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux.
