How to test your keyboard
- Click on an empty part of the page, so the page has the focus.
- Press each key. A key that you hold is bright. A key that you already tested stays tinted.
- Read the key, code and keyCode of the last key under the layout.
- Press Reset to start again. Try to test all the keys.
What the test shows
A key that does not light up when you press it may be dirty or broken. Press it a few times and test it again. If it still does not light up, the switch is probably at fault.
The rollover number is the count of keys held at the same time. Many office keyboards report only 6 keys, and some report fewer. A gaming keyboard can report all keys (N-key rollover).
Ghosting is when a keyboard shows a key that you did not press, or misses a key when you press three or more together. Hold keys that you use together in a game, and check that all of them light up.
The key is what the press types, for example a or A. The code is the physical key, for example KeyA, so it does not change with the language. The keyCode is an old number that some programs still use.
Notes about the layout
The layout is the ANSI US keyboard with 104 keys. Your keyboard may have other keys, for example an ISO key next to the left Shift. The page lists such keys under the layout when you press them.
The system may keep some keys, such as the volume keys or the Windows key. The browser does not send these keys to the page, so they may not light up.
On a Mac, the Command key shows as Win and Option shows as Alt.
Questions

Yes. It is free. There are no ads, no limits and no sign-up. You do not install anything.
Does the page record what I type?
No. The page only shows which key you press. It does not send any key to a server. It also keeps no list of your keys after you close the tab. Read more about privacy.
What is key rollover?
Rollover is the number of keys that the keyboard can report at the same time. Hold many keys. The number held now and the highest number show under the keyboard.
Why does a key not light up?
The switch may be dirty or broken. The system may take the key, as with the Windows key or a media key. Press the key a few times, then test it again.
What are key and code?
The key is what the press types, like a or A. The code is the physical place of the key, like KeyA. The code does not change with the language layout.
Can I test a Mac or a laptop keyboard?
Yes. The Mac Command key shows as Win, and Option shows as Alt. Keys that the system keeps, such as brightness, may not reach the page.
