How to test your webcam

  1. Press Start webcam test. The browser asks for permission. Press Allow.
  2. Choose your camera in the list if you have more than one.
  3. Check the picture, the light and the focus. Use Mirror to flip the preview.
  4. Read the resolution and the frames each second. Press Snapshot to save a picture.

What the test shows

The resolution is the width and the height of the picture in pixels. A size of 1280 by 720 is called HD. A size of 1920 by 1080 is called Full HD. A size of 640 by 480 is low.

The frame rate is the number of pictures each second. A value of 30 is smooth for calls. A value under 15 looks jerky. The page measures the frame rate from the real picture, so it shows what the camera delivers now.

The mirror button flips the preview from left to right, like a mirror in a room. Other people in a call see the picture without this flip. The snapshot file is not flipped.

You can ask for a size in the list. The browser gives the nearest size that the camera can send. The page shows the size that it got.

If the camera does not work

If the browser says that it blocked the camera, click the lock icon in the address bar and allow the camera for this site. Then press Start again.

If the picture is black, look for a privacy shutter on the lens. Some laptops have a key that turns the camera off. Check the light around you.

If the page says that the camera is in use, close other apps and tabs that may use it, such as a call app. Then press Start again.

If the page says that no camera was found, connect a camera and check the cable. Then reload the page.

Questions

Is the webcam test free?

Yes. It is free. There are no ads, no limits and no sign-up. You do not install anything.

Does the page upload my video or my photos?

No. The picture goes from your camera to this tab and nowhere else. A snapshot is a file that your browser makes on your device. The page does not keep it. Read more about privacy.

How do I find the resolution of my webcam?

Press Start. The page shows the size that the camera gives, for example 1280 by 720, and the frames each second. These are real values from the camera, not a guess.

Why is the picture black or not shown?

A privacy shutter may cover the lens. Another app may use the camera. The browser may use another device, so choose a different camera in the list.

Why is the text in the picture backwards?

The mirror button flips the preview, like a mirror. Turn it off to see the picture as other people see it. The snapshot is not flipped.

Why is the resolution lower than the camera box says?

The browser and the camera choose the size together. A weak USB port, low light or a call app can lower it. Pick a size in the list and press Start again.
